The other day, I was watching (and taking photos of) a pelican in backwaters. Care to know its style—the four steps it follows to acquire food? Here they are:
Step 1: Just float by, calm, quiet, dignified. Continue as long as it takes.
Step 2: The moment you spot fish (or tadpoles or crabs), open your bill wide.
Step 3: Dive gently, but quickly, dipping the open beak in, and craning (or should it be pelicaning 😉) the neck, ready to scoop.
Step 4: Emerge successful with fish in the beak’s pouch.
Right ho, that’s it! Lesson over!
